Your free first lesson

What happens in your first consultation

The first session is completely free — a relaxed chance to get to know each other, assess your level, talk through your goals, and build a personalised learning plan.

  1. 1

    Introduction & musical goals

    5–10 min

We start with a relaxed conversation about what brings you to the guitar:

    • Why you want to learn guitar
    • What music you enjoy listening to
    • Your favourite artists or genres
    • Whether you have played before
    • What you would like to achieve

For example: playing for enjoyment, learning favourite songs, developing classical technique, preparing for ABRSM or Trinity exams, performing confidently, or studying music more seriously.

  2. 2

    Guitar assessment

    10–15 min

If you already play, you are welcome to play a short piece or exercise. This helps me understand your:

    • Technique
    • Rhythm
    • Finger coordination
    • Musical understanding
    • Reading ability (if applicable)
    • Overall confidence level

There is no pressure or judgement — the goal is simply to understand your starting point. Complete beginners need no prior knowledge at all.

  3. 3

    Practical discussion

    5–10 min

Together we work out the practicalities:

    • How often lessons should take place
    • How much time you can realistically practise each week
    • Whether lessons focus on enjoyment, exams, technique, performance — or a combination

A realistic practice routine is often more valuable than an ambitious one that cannot be maintained.

  4. 4

    Personal learning roadmap

    5 min

Based on the discussion and assessment, I outline a personalised plan:

    Short-term

    1–3 months
    • Learn basic chords
    • Improve finger technique
    • Play your first complete piece
    • Develop rhythm and timing

    Medium-term

    3–12 months
    • Build repertoire
    • Improve musical expression
    • Prepare for performances
    • Work towards an exam grade

    Long-term

    1–3 years
    • Advanced technique
    • Higher ABRSM / Trinity grades
    • Confident independent playing
    • Performance opportunities
  5. 5

    Questions & next steps

Finally, there is time to ask anything you like about:

    • Lesson structure
    • Practice expectations
    • Exam preparation
    • Guitar purchases
    • Suitable instruments for beginners

If we both feel the lessons are a good fit, regular tuition can then be arranged — no obligation either way.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Do you teach complete beginners?

Yes. A large part of my teaching is with complete beginners of all ages. Early lessons focus on comfortable posture, a clear sound, and simple, satisfying pieces so you make real progress from the very first session.

What age do you teach from?

I teach children from age 8 and upwards, as well as teenagers and adults. From around eight, most children have the focus and hand size to enjoy structured lessons and progress steadily.

Do you prepare students for ABRSM and Trinity exams?

Yes. I prepare students for both ABRSM and Trinity graded guitar exams, from the early grades through to the higher grades, with a clear, structured path through technique, pieces, scales, sight-reading and aural work.

Where do lessons take place?

Lessons are taught from a dedicated, comfortable home studio in Colchester. Local home visits are also available for private tuition within the surrounding area.

Do you offer home visits?

Yes, home visits are available for private tuition within Colchester and nearby areas. Get in touch with your location and I will confirm availability and any travel arrangements.

Do I need my own guitar?

You will need a guitar to practise on at home. If you are just starting out, I am happy to advise on a suitable, good-value classical or acoustic guitar before you buy.

How long are lessons?

Lessons are typically 30, 45 or 60 minutes. Thirty minutes suits younger or newer students, while longer lessons give more time for exam preparation and intermediate or advanced work.

Do you teach adults?

Absolutely. Many of my students are adults — complete beginners returning to a long-held ambition, as well as players looking to refine their technique and musicality in a calm, pressure-free setting.

Do you teach electric guitar?

The focus is classical and acoustic guitar. This specialism is what allows lessons to go deep on technique, tone and musicianship rather than spreading thinly across styles.
